Special Note to Parents From Dr. Mayer
When bringing in young children parents are often
concerned that the child will be afraid of the office,
staff, or treatment. For this reason it is best to bring
a child for a first appointment for a routine check up
as opposed to waiting until a child has a painful
emergency need. If a parent or sibling is already a
patient of the office bringing the child along to
observe an appointment and familiarize the child to the
office and team is an excellent way to start.
Parents, grandparents, siblings, uncles, aunts, and
friends can all have a large impact on how a child
reacts to dental treatment and the dental office. It is
very important not to let the child hear a parent,
sibling, or any one else speak about any negative
experiences of previous dental treatment. A child
hearing Grandpa say “I hate going to the dentist-when I
was a boy they…”does nothing except cause angst in the
child and make the dental appointment very difficult for
everyone involved-the child, parent, dentist, hygienist,
et cetera. In general if you can’t say something
positive to the child don’t say anything. Not letting
others know of your child’s upcoming appointment reduces
the likelihood that your child will be scared by
comments made by others.
As a rule of thumb children who do not have pre-conceived
notions about dental treatment do very well in our
office and it is not uncommon for parents to be very
surprised at how well their children do with their
visits.
There are books available at the library about a child’s
first visit to a dentist. Some suggestions include the
Barenstain Bears or “Just going to the Dentist”
by Mercer Mayer. Should you wish to prepare your child
in this way I highly recommend you read the book
yourself first to ensure it is appropriate for your
child |
